AIO vs. SEO: what changes when customers ask AI instead of Google
Synnc Labs · · 7 min read
The short answer
SEO is about ranking on a results page that a person scrolls; AIO (AI optimization) is about being the business an AI assistant names in its written answer. The foundations are shared, including a fast, crawlable site, clear service pages and good reviews, but AIO puts more weight on plain factual statements, consistency across sources and mentions on other sites. Most Long Island businesses should keep doing SEO and adjust how they write and structure content so it works for both.
The short version
When someone in Garden City types “kitchen remodeler near me” into Google, they get a map pack, some ads, and a list of websites. They click around and decide. That is the world SEO was built for: your job is to rank high enough to get the click.
When the same person asks ChatGPT “I want to redo my kitchen in Garden City, who should I call?”, they get a paragraph. It might name three companies and explain why. There is no list to scroll. Your job in that world is to be one of the three, and to be described accurately. That is AIO.
The two overlap more than the jargon suggests. But a few things genuinely change, and it helps to know which.
What stays the same
A slow, broken or uncrawlable website hurts you in both. AI tools that search the web live rely on the same kind of crawling search engines do, and if your pages are hidden behind heavy scripts or take ten seconds to load, they may not get read at all.
Relevance still comes from content. If you never mention that you install heat pumps, neither Google nor an assistant will connect you to heat pump questions. Location still comes from your address, your service area pages, and your Google Business Profile. Trust still comes from reviews and from other reputable sites mentioning you.
So if you have invested in solid SEO, that work is not wasted. It is the ground floor of AIO.
What changes
The first change is the unit of value. In SEO, the page is what ranks. In AIO, the individual fact or sentence is what gets used. An assistant might pull your hours from one source, your service area from another, and a description of your specialty from a review. That means every fact about your business needs to be stated clearly somewhere, ideally in one sentence that could be quoted on its own.
The second change is how much consistency matters. A search engine can rank your page even if your Yelp listing has an old address. An assistant comparing sources may decide the information is unreliable and simply leave you out, or worse, give a customer the wrong address. Cleaning up old listings is dull work that matters more now.
The third change is the weight of off-site mentions. Assistants are trying not to recommend something wrong, so they lean on corroboration. Being mentioned in a Newsday article, a town chamber directory, or a supplier’s list of certified installers carries real weight because it confirms you are who you say you are.
- SEO rewards pages; AIO rewards quotable facts
- SEO tolerates some inconsistency; AIO penalizes it
- SEO measures clicks; AIO often produces fewer clicks but warmer leads
- SEO keyword targeting still helps, but natural question phrasing matters more
How to write for both at once
The good news is you do not need two versions of your website. Content that works well for AI assistants tends to also work well for people and for Google. The habits are simple: lead with the answer, be specific, and avoid filler.
Take a service page for a Patchogue-based electrician. A weak opening is “We are a family-owned company dedicated to excellence in all your electrical needs.” A strong opening is “We install and upgrade residential electrical panels in Patchogue, Medford, Sayville and the surrounding South Shore towns, usually within a week of the estimate.” The second one answers what, where and how fast in a single sentence an assistant can lift.
Then add a short FAQ to each important page. Write the questions the way customers say them on the phone. Answer each in two or three sentences. Mark them up with FAQ schema so machines can read the structure. This one change helps search snippets, AI Overviews and chat assistants all at once.
How to measure AIO when there is no ranking
This is the uncomfortable part. There is no AI equivalent of a rank tracker that tells you you are number three for “dentist Huntington.” Answers vary by phrasing, by user, and from one day to the next.
What you can do is sample. Pick 10 to 20 questions your customers realistically ask, run them through the main assistants once a month, and record whether you are mentioned and whether the details are correct. Watch referral traffic from AI tools in your analytics. And ask every new customer how they found you, because “ChatGPT told me” is becoming a real answer.
Over a few months, that gives you a trend line. It is less precise than SEO reporting, and anyone who tells you otherwise is overselling their dashboard.
Where to put your effort first
If your SEO basics are weak, fix those first: site speed, mobile layout, a page for each service, a complete Google Business Profile. Those help everywhere.
If your basics are solid, the highest-value AIO moves are usually rewriting key pages to be answer-first, adding structured data, cleaning up inconsistent listings, and building a handful of genuine third-party mentions. For most Long Island service businesses, that is a few weeks of focused work followed by steady maintenance, not a six-figure overhaul.

Questions
Common questions.
Should I stop doing SEO and focus on AI search?+
No. Google still drives a large share of local discovery, and its AI Overviews draw on the same signals as regular rankings. SEO is the foundation that AI optimization builds on.
What is the difference between AIO, GEO and AEO?+
Mostly branding. AIO (AI optimization), GEO (generative engine optimization) and AEO (answer engine optimization) all describe making your business easy for AI tools to find, understand and recommend.
Will AI search mean fewer visitors to my website?+
Possibly fewer casual visitors, since some questions get answered without a click. The people who do click through after an AI recommendation tend to be further along in deciding, so they often convert better.
Do keywords still matter for AI search?+
Yes, but in a looser way. You still need to use the words customers use, such as the service and the town. But writing naturally in full questions and answers matters more than repeating an exact keyword phrase.
