Google AI Overviews and your local business: what to do now

Synnc Labs · · 7 min read

The short answer

Google AI Overviews are AI-written summaries that appear above regular search results and often answer a question before anyone clicks. For local businesses, the fix is not a new trick but better fundamentals: answer-first service pages, FAQ content with schema, a complete Google Business Profile, strong reviews and consistent listings. Long Island businesses that make their information easy to quote are better positioned to be cited in Overviews and to keep winning clicks from the map pack below them.

What AI Overviews are

AI Overviews are the summaries Google shows at the top of many search results, written by its Gemini models and drawing on several web pages at once. They usually include small links to the sources they used. Google has also introduced AI Mode, a more conversational, chat-style search experience built on the same idea.

For informational searches, like “how often should I service my boiler” or “do I need a permit for a fence in the Town of Hempstead,” an Overview often answers the question outright. For purely local, ready-to-buy searches like “plumber near me,” the map pack and business listings still tend to dominate, though Google keeps experimenting with how these blend together.

What it means for a local business

The honest answer is: fewer casual clicks for general questions, and more weight on being one of the sources Google trusts. If you wrote a blog post about how to winterize sprinklers, an Overview may now answer that question directly, and some people who would have visited your page will not.

But the people who do click through after reading an Overview are often more serious, and being cited in the Overview itself puts your name in front of them at the moment they are learning about a problem. A homeowner in Port Jefferson reading about ice dams in January who sees your roofing company cited is a warm lead.

And for the searches that matter most to local businesses, the ready-to-hire ones, your Google Business Profile and reviews still do much of the heavy lifting.

Step one: make your Google Business Profile airtight

Google’s AI features lean heavily on Google’s own data, and for local businesses that means your Business Profile. If you only fix one thing, fix this.

  • Pick the most specific primary category, and add relevant secondary ones
  • List your service areas by town, matching the places you actually go
  • Fill in services with short descriptions, not just names
  • Keep hours accurate, including holiday hours around Thanksgiving and the winter holidays
  • Add real photos of your work, team and vehicles regularly
  • Answer the questions in the Q&A section yourself before strangers do
  • Reply to every review, briefly and professionally

Step two: rewrite key pages to be answer-first

AI Overviews pull short, clear passages that directly answer a question. Pages that bury the answer under three paragraphs of company history are hard to quote. Pages that start with a direct answer are easy.

Go through your most important service pages and blog posts. For each one, ask what question it answers, then make sure the first two sentences answer it plainly. A pest control company in Lindenhurst might open its tick-control page with “We treat yards for ticks across the South Shore from April through October, with most properties needing three to four treatments a season.” That is specific, local and quotable.

Below the answer, add detail: how it works, what affects the price, what to expect, and a short FAQ. The detail is what convinces the person; the opening sentence is what gets you into the summary.

Step three: add FAQ content and structured data

Questions and answers are the native format of AI search. A well-written FAQ section on each key page, using the real phrasing of customer questions, gives Google clean material to draw from.

Pair it with structured data. FAQPage, LocalBusiness and Service schema label your content in a format machines read directly. Google has changed how it displays FAQ rich results over the years, but the underlying markup still helps it understand your pages, and other AI tools read it too.

Step four: track what’s actually happening

Google Search Console now includes data from AI features within its overall performance numbers, though it does not break them out in detail. Watch for changes in impressions versus clicks on your informational pages. If impressions hold steady while clicks drop, Overviews are likely answering those questions directly.

More important than traffic, track leads. Calls from your Business Profile, form submissions, and bookings tell you whether visibility is turning into business. Search the questions your customers ask every month or so and note whether your site is cited in the Overview.

Don’t panic, and don’t chase tricks

Every big change to Google brings a wave of people selling shortcuts. There is no special markup or secret phrase that forces your business into an AI Overview. Google says the same quality signals that drive regular rankings drive these features.

Our own experience backs that up. What Is It Worth?, one of our products, earns more than 100,000 organic clicks a week by doing the basics thoroughly: clear answers, clean structure, fast pages. For a Long Island business the scale is smaller, but the playbook is the same. Do the fundamentals well and keep them current.

Questions

Common questions.

Can I opt my business out of Google AI Overviews?+

Site owners can limit how Google uses their content in snippets with technical controls, but doing so can also reduce your visibility in regular results. For most local businesses, opting out does more harm than good.

Do AI Overviews show up for local searches like “plumber near me”?+

Sometimes, but for many ready-to-hire local searches the map pack and Business Profiles still lead. Google keeps testing new layouts, so it is worth keeping your Business Profile in top shape either way.

How do I get my website cited in an AI Overview?+

There is no guaranteed method. Clear, answer-first content, FAQ sections with schema markup, a fast and crawlable site, and strong overall SEO all improve your chances of being used as a source.

Are AI Overviews hurting my website traffic?+

They may reduce clicks on general informational pages. Check Search Console for pages where impressions are steady but clicks have fallen. Focus on whether calls and leads are holding up, since that is what pays the bills.
